Oslo String Quartet

Violin, viola and cello

“Chamber music does not get better”

Magnus Andersson

“With an approach that reveals all the beauty of their playing, giving all four voices a crystal-clear, singular perceptibility and at the same time bringing the voices together, they integrate the listener right into the ensemble.”

Biography

A sign of talent and skill is to witness how long someone has kept themselves relevant. The Oslo String Quartet was established the same year as the Risør Chamber Music Festival, and like the festival, it has endured for over 30 years. This means that they were not only great to begin with, but they also know how to renew themselves and stay at the forefront.

Liv Hilde, Øystein, Geir Inge, and Magnus are one of Northern Europe’s most acclaimed string quartets, if not internationally. The string quartet is often referred to as the very core of chamber music. Norway should be proud to have four musicians who are constantly mentioned among the best.

Today, they are known as a versatile ensemble that can play the classics with utmost proficiency, but also charm with pop and jazz arrangements. Possibly to their surprise, they have discovered that the “serious” classical audience appreciates this variation. In other words, here we have four musicians who know themselves and their audience.

Geir Inge Lotsberg plays a Giuseppe Guarneri from 1703, on loan from Dextra Musica.

Liv Hilde Klokk plays a Thomas Balestrieri from 1759, on loan from Dextra Musica.

Øystein Sonstad plays a Jean Baptiste Rogeri from 1690, on loan from Dextra Musica.

Magnus Boye Hansen plays a Matteo Goffriller from 1710, on loan from Dextra Musica.
