Tor Morten Halvorsen

Conductor KOR300

Tor Morten Halvorsen studied piano and music education at the Norwegian Academy of Music. During his studies, he became assistant to cathedral organist Terje Kvam at Oslo Cathedral, and conductor of the Oslo Cathedral Boys Choir. He has also worked as choir conductor for various ensembles in Oslo, such as the Women’s Choral Society at the University of Oslo, and The Norwegian Student Choral Society.

He later studied choral and orchestra conducting at the Royal Danish Academy of Music under Prof. Dan-Olof Stenlund, and had his public debut concert as a conductor in Copenhagen in 2002. In 2005 he settled in Lyngør and worked as a choir director for regional choirs in addition to teaching choral conducting. In collaboration with Risør municipality, he founded “Sang i Øst”, a regional program for strengthening singing for children through the establishment of children’s choirs and the training of choir conductors and singers.

For the 250th Anniversary of Mozart’s birth, he acted as a substitute for the cantor at Oslo Cathedral, and worked with “Mozart and the Mystery”, a project which included performing a significant part of Mozart’s liturgical music, both in concert and during church services. This was a collaboration with Oslo Baroque Orchestra and Oslo Cathedral Choir.

For a number of years, Tor Morten has taught summer courses run by the Südtiroler Sängerband together with conductor colleagues from Copenhagen, and regularly does projects with ensembles associated with this network. Tor Morten now works as a cantor in Risør and is the conductor of the Risør motet choir.
