Virtuosity from the Baltic Sea

Modest Mussorgsky (originally without the g) actually means “introverted music creator”. But one cannot say that about his masterpiece “Pictures at an Exhibition”. The Promenade and The Bogatyr Gates (The Great Gate of Kiev) are some of the most recognizable pieces in classical music and are far from introverted. But it was created by a true music creator, which Mussorgsky truly was.

But before we get to that piece, you will have a rare opportunity to hear one of Sweden’s great early female composers, and the first to be educated as a music director at the Royal College of Music. She was a true musical multitalent, as she studied violin, organ, piano, cello, composition, and harmony. Luckily, she managed to write her violin sonata before gender roles forced her to give up composing after she got married.

Both pieces are wonderfully virtuosic, and therefore it is a pleasure that three of our greatest names at this year’s festival are performing. Pekka, Benjamin, and Mishka are ready to show you what the best in their field can achieve when music and artistry are at the highest level.
