Chaminade Club - at home with Brita og Jan Egil, Ringveien 41

Thursday, June 27 2024 11 am

The turn of the 20th century saw the rapid spread of the Chaminade Music Club phenomenon, with some of these chamber music clubs still in existence today. At their peak, there were 1,500 such clubs across the USA, each named after the French style icon of the 1900s: composer and concert performer Cécile Chaminade.

After all, it was the salons of homes where women’s music-making predominantly took place. In the home of Brita and Jan Egil, we allow the esteemed Virginia Woolf to articulate the significance of having “A Room of One’s Own.” With women’s suffrage on the horizon, Virginia Woolf debates the status quo with her contemporaries, female composers Germaine Tailleferre, Ethel Smyth, and the superstar Cécile Chaminade.

Music by Cécile Chaminade, Germaine Tailleferre, Alma Mahler, and Ethel Smyth will be featured.
