Rhapsody in Blue
In February 1924, George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” took New York by storm, marking a groundbreaking fusion of classical sophistication and jazz vitality. Joined by luminaries like Igor Stravinsky and Leopold Stokowski, audiences witnessed a transformative moment in music history.
A year earlier, Milhaud’s “La création du monde” paid homage to jazz’s vibrant rhythms echoing through Harlem and Parisian clubs. Both compositions challenged conventions and blurred genre boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on musical evolution.
The concert begins with pianist Marc-André Hamelin’s solo performance, adding a personal narrative to this celebration of creative exploration and cultural exchange. Through these timeless compositions, we’re reminded of music’s profound ability to unite hearts across generations and continents.
