Joseph Haydn: A Portrait Concert

This year's festival takes a closer look at this giant of Western music. So much of what we call classical music today was defined by Haydn.

About the concert

Haydn was over 60 when he wrote the Piano Trio in F-sharp minor and the Sonata in C major. Both works come from the years when he conquered London, but there are no triumphant fanfares here. Instead, we find a composer playing in the shadows, one who still surprises himself, and us.

The concert opens with Sally Beamish's "Trance" from 2023, a work that listens back to the master and shows how relevant Haydn still is to composers today.

Erling E. Guldbrandsen guides us through this portrait concert

We have invited Erling E. Guldbrandsen, Professor of Musicology at the University of Oslo, to guide us through this listening hour.

Erling insisted that the works should be performed in full and not be interrupted by too much talking. Drawing on his background, he will share his knowledge and anecdotes about both the music and the man behind it.

And remember the 6.00 pm concert, The Pioneers, where you will hear Haydn in a broader musical context. Stone by stone, knowledge is built. The more you learn, the more you enjoy.
