Sanae Yoshida

Sanae Yoshida is a pianist based in Oslo who regularly works with both contemporary and classical repertoire as a soloist, chamber musician, and ensemble participant. She has a close collaboration with several composers and has premiered numerous works.

As an artistic research fellow at the Norwegian Academy of Music/The Norwegian Artistic Research Programme, Yoshida is working on the project “The Microtonal Piano – and the Accomplished Interpreter.”

Yoshida is a member of Ensemble Ernst and is the founder of Ensemble Temporum, an Oslo-based ensemble for contemporary music.

As a member of Fragaria Vesca, she recorded chamber music works by David Monrad Johansen in 2015, released on SIMAX. The CD was nominated for the “Spellemannsprisen” in the classical music category. In 2015, she also recorded contemporary music works by Øyvind Mæland on the LAWO label. The following year, she recorded chamber music works by Halfdan Cleve, again with Fragaria Vesca. In 2023, Lawo will release her first solo album, consisting of works for microtonal piano.

She has been a soloist with orchestras including the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Barratt Due Symphony Orchestra. Yoshida has performed as a soloist at several festivals, including the Ultima Festival, the Bergen International Festival, the Ilios Festival, Impuls Graz (Austria), the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music (Germany), and the Engadin Summer Music Festival (Switzerland). As a chamber musician and ensemble participant, she has performed with various renowned ensembles and orchestras.

After studying at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, Sanae Yoshida moved to Norway in 2005 to study with Professor Jiri Hlinka at the Barratt Due Institute of Music. She later studied for several years with Professor Håkon Austbø. Yoshida resides in Nesodden, a short boat ride from Oslo.
